Kumarikandam (Lemuria) Tamil Myth

Kumari Kandam is a land mass that is supposed to be submerged under the India Ocean, extending from the southern tip of peninsular India, to Madagascar in the west, and Australia in the east. It is sometimes considered as part or all of Lemuria, a hypothetical continent variously located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. References to Kumari Kandam can be found in the Tamil literature. Inferring from these references suggest that extensive land areas occupied by the Tamils have been lost to the sea due to massive tidal waves or tsunami. Legends say two sangams were established. First two sangams - Muthal sangam, Idai sangam was in kumari kandam and it was devoured by sea only the pandya king escaped and thus we don't have any literature of this period.

  1. History of kumari kandam (Lemuria) theory.
1860 Philip Lutley Sclater Puzzled by the presence of fossil lemurs in both Madagascar and India, but not in Africa nor the Middle East, Sclater proposed that Madagascar and India had once been part of a larger continent, which he named "Lemuria" for its lemurs. The acceptance of Darwinism led scientists to seek to trace the diffusion of species from their points of evolutionary origin
  2. Melchior Neumayr in his book Erdgeschichte in 1887. Many hypothetical submerged land bridges and continents were proposed during the 19th century, in order to account for the present distribution of species.
  3. Ernst Haeckel, a German Darwinian taxonomist, proposed Lemuria as an explanation for the absence of "missing link" fossil records. According to another source, Haeckel put forward this thesis prior to Sclater (but without using the name 'Lemuria'). Locating the origins of the human species on this lost continent, he claimed the fossil record could not be found because it had sunk beneath the sea.
  4. In 1999, drilling by the JOIDES Resolution research vessel in the Indian Ocean discovered evidence that a continent about a third of the size of Australia sank about 20 million years ago. Samples showed pollen and fragments of wood in a 90 million-year-old sediment. This might lead one to expect similarity of dinosaur fossil evidence and will help to understand the breakup of the Indian and Australian land masses. It does not support the concept of Lemuria as a land bridge for mammals.
  5. Madame Blavatsky's Lemuria,Lemuria entered the lexicon of the Occult through the works of Madame Blavatsky, who claimed in the 1880s to have been shown an ancient, pre-Atlantean Book of Dzyan by the Mahatmas. Within Blavatsky's complex cosmology, which includes seven "Root Races", Lemuria was occupied by the "Third Root Race", which was about seven foot tall, sexually hermaphroditic, egg-laying, mentally undeveloped and spiritually more pure than the following "Root Races". Before the coming of the Lemurians, the second "Root Race" is said to have dwelled in Hyperborea. After the subsequent creation of mammals, Mme. Blavatsky revealed to her readers, some Lemurians turned to bestiality. The gods, aghast at the behavior of these "mindless" men, sank Lemuria into the ocean and created a "Fourth Root Race"—endowed with intellect—on Atlantis.Lemuria and Mount Shasta
  6. In 1894, Frederick Spencer Oliver published A Dweller on Two Planets, which claimed that survivors from a sunken continent called Lemuria were living in or on Mount Shasta in northern California. The Lemurians lived in a complex of tunnels beneath the mountain and occasionally were seen walking the surface dressed in white robes. This belief has been repeated by such individuals as the cultist Guy Warren Ballard in the 1930s who formed the I AM Foundation. It is also repeated by followers of the Ascended Masters and the Great White Brotherhood. This list includes such organizations as Bridge to Freedom, The Summit Lighthouse, Church Universal and Triumphant, The Temple of The Presence, and The Hearts Center.According to L. Sprague de Camp, Mme. Blavatsky was influenced by other writers on the theme of Lost Continents, notably Ignatius L. Donnelly, a cult leader named Thomas Lake Harris and the French writer Louis Jacolliot.
  7. Dravidologist Devaneya Pavanar, who held that all languages on earth were merely corrupted Tamil dialects proposed Kumari Kandam is a sunken kingdom also known as Lemuria . According to these modernist interpretations of motifs in classical Tamil literature — the epics Cilappatikaram and Manimekalai that describe the submerged city of Puhar — the Dravidians originally came from land south of the present day coast of South India that became submerged by successive floods. There are various claims from Tamil authors that there was a large land mass connecting Australia and the present day Tamil Nadu coast.Adiyarkkunelar, described the distance between the Prahuli and Kumari rivers as 700 kavathams. This distance has been interpreted as about 7,000 modern miles (11,000 km).

What does the Tamil Literature say exactly?Three literary sources are said to say something about the kumari kandam , let us see what they say.

Silapathikaram says,
kumarikOdum kodunkadal koLLa..." The mighty sea at the end of kumari(kanyakumari) submergedHere the author ilango adigal speaks about sea around kumari submerging the puhar(keveri pattinam) port.Silappadikaram'also describes Kadal Vadimpalampa Nindra Pandyan said to have thrown his spear towards the sea. The sea retaliated by swallowing a large area including Pahruli river and Panmalai Adukkam.

Manimekalai says,
Records the same incident of the puhar being engulfed by sea. Both silapathikaram and manimekalai both not being eyewitness accounts and known for gross exageration of facts clearly talk sea engulfing the city of puhar.

Kalittogai
Sangam literary work, `Kalithogai' (Mullaikkali, verse number 4) calls it `Kadal vowal.' The poem says that when tidal waves swept away his land, the Pandyan monarch did not despair, but forged ahead into the territories of Cheras and Chozhas and brought the invaded country under his sway, thus making good the loss of territory due to the sea-swell.

What does the sinhala literature say?Mahavamsa records sea taking the land in 326BC which is also mentioned in Rajwalikathe.

Analysis
All the above theories about Lemuriya went out of the window, the Continental dift theory was proposed.Kumari kandam was thrown out of the window when the tsunami data was analaysed, Still the Tani tamil Iyakkam and tamil elam activists held the theory for legitimisation of tamil elam demand. But after the Tsunami hit the sub continent, everybody knew what is said in the Silapathikaram and manimekalai is either strom surges or Tsunami.

Still many hold on to the theory , because it advances the age of Sangam , they can always claim all the literature was lost to the sea. Interestingly the three sangams were proposed in 11th century AD by Iraniyar agamporul.

Conclusion
There is no such thing as kumari kandam , it is just another attempt to increase tamil antiquity to prehistoric times.

  2. The above BBC link does not support Lemuria continent.

What is this Proto Dravida , common wake up , there is no such thing

    1. What BBC is some kind of authority on Historical Matters? Lot of Proof means no proof or absolutely no proof.

    2. Mr.Moda i agree with you that BBC is nt a authority on historical Matters but what they telecast in BBC was a true fact. If you cant understand the post which posted by Mr.muscat stating they had speak and telecast about kumari kandam (lemuria) with alot of proof means there is alot of proof was found out by archealogist which was revealed in BBC. so when people say there is a proof they mean that it was exist. So pls do not say that it was not exist. If you do not know about it you shouldnt talk like that. If ur good enough you go and refer to tamil history and also world history whereby there is a lot of matters and history and also proof about the existent of civilisation of lemuria(kumari kandam)as well as existence of civilisation of Atlantis . 3. Well Karan
I don't need certificate from you on my goodness.

I have to laugh at your logic. If there is a good proof ,why not say it as bullet points. Why say Lot of proof. So, You say lot of proof, when you don't have any, this I have seen consistently on this blog.

    4. Mr.Moda Don't forget dat u r arguing 'bout a controversy and i mean it! It has neither been proved r8 nor wrong! It still remains a controversy! It may or may not be proved ri8. So Karan of control u'r emotions! It's a matter of emotions and i know it! But u cant say dat it is ri8 without any proofs! Both of u dont forget dat there still few more attributes of natures dat always says to mankind dat "u r wrong 'bout me!" .,,,.

Why don't you cut the crap and present the evidence. Why say there is some unknown things in nature that will come and haunt me. C'mon, the idea was put forth by dravidian scholars to push back the age of tamil literature. That is a made up theory. You expect nature to support your fantasies, Good Luck.

  4. For people who call it as made up theory, why don't they just carbon date the remains under water and justify what they say is correct; You people talk like you created earth and know what happened from the very beginning, while organisations like BBC or NASA exploring these things and approves them scientifically.....

    1. Is it not imperative that people who put up theories should give evidence. You Seem to be insane to expect others to provide evidence to disprove the theories. Why can't people who put up the theories carbon date the remains under water. They won't, because they can't, since you can't carbon date things found in Imagination.

  6. A Few more cock and bull stories for you.
    - It was not "continental drift theory" - that proposed "sunken masses"
    - continental drift theory was overridden by "plate tectonic" theory. Tectonics does not support rising of sea or submerging of sea - but that contradicts inundation maps.
Also tectonics theory has its own "fantasies" *or unproven assumptions" such as the land was once two (in north and one in south) massive land, india and Australia were part of antartica and so on. Tectonics seem to explain formation of oceans and Himalayas, plateaus. That is why it is hailed by scientists. But it also has own contradictions with voluminous sea floor mapping, seismic data observations - Also it does fully correlate with ages of the rocks of mountains (it significantly underestimates them).
All of these of course do not prove the existence of sunken masses - but it questions the theory that dismissed it.
Also recently (Jul - 2013) - more megento-sea floor mapping found evidence of sunken lands between india and Australia (which was prohibited by tectonic plate theory)

    1. You are talking about land masses dated 130 million years are much older than that,
      Your assumptions are
Humans have evolved and were just like modern humans
      if they have evolved
      they were able to speak
If they are able to speak
They spoke in tamil and not only that they also had script and that script was used to write the literature and that is preserved to this day.

That is called Cock and Bull stories.

  7. I talked nothing about "tamil" whether they were able to speak/write. Nor it was about x million years. You assumed it I said.
I only gave you the references that talk about "marine evidence" of structures investigated by NIO-Goa and Graham Hancock. The reference compares with inundation maps that show sea levels in the various past 1000s of years. It talks about the structures found in the ocean of poopmpuhar. Carbon dating, indundation mapping and the matching with 7200 years calculation of Irayanar AgaporuL. Though that could be coincidence - the strcture found in the ocean is real. That still does not prove anything about "Kumari" or "Lemuria" - but it sure warrants further investigation on what else could it be?
Same thing about sunken dwaraka evidence - the sonar tracing that shows - structures similar to harappan in the noeth-west of Goa.
The real difficulty is the expense in "Marin Archeology" - digging the sea floor is not technologically and financially viable task.

I am not obsessed with Kumari or Tamil. But I would not dismiss anything based on a theory that itself has shaky foundation. If Continetal drift throw out sunken continent, continental drift was thrown out by plate tectonic theory (which also does not support sunken continents) - but like continental drift tectonic also is unexplainable on what are their driving/causing forces. Also a lot of experimental geological data contradict with tectonic theory, Therefore the concept of sunken continents still remain alive along with the marine archeological evidences provided by NIO-Goa and Graham Hancock.

    1. Your Link Says Tamil.

Iraniyar Agamporul comes after 10th century AD. Neither somebody before him talks about his ideas, not somebody after, Only from last century that there is talk of Kumari kandam.

Shows that the idea was Iraniyar agamporul and as you say it is just coincidence some structures have been found and as yourself say, structures have been found all along sea coast of India. Go to Myth of Tamil Sangam article, you will know what I am talking about.

Iraniyar talks about Storm Rush or best Tsunami. Now Taking about size of Kumarikandam as described, there is no big volcano in the Southeast Asia which can submerge such large area. Now there is one super volcano near Madagascar, but if it has really submerged kumarikandam, than how come it has no effect on madagascar and Africa ,much nearer than itself.

This volcano is responsible for continental drift of Australia, India and Africa.

If you want to believe in Graham Hancock theories, I have nothing to talk to you, I demolish conspiracy theories, not creat them. Bye

    2. Mr. Sundar
Its as simple as this....either you find facts to support ur theory , not some mindless rambling of a guy named IRANIYAR......and secondly, Tamil may have been an ancient dialect. But I'm sure as hell linguistically it was spoken only by a minority...and like most modern languages , didn't evolve......hence , a poor and lost language..... The fact that ur English is better than ur Tamil states my argument....

I respect your Views research and opinion. You keep exploring. Our own people do not support when we march towards a new search or discovery. if the same is done by a foreigner then they accept with heart and say them a great scholar and researcher. Hippocrates always exist, the best way is to ignore and proceed.

    4. Lemuria is an imaginary story. This imaginary story was written by western authors in western countries in 19th century. At that time these stories were famous in western countries. In 20th century tamil authors translated and dubbed these stories as kumari kandam. This story is an attempt to increase the tamil antiquity. Tamil literatures did not mentioned about continents sunk or rose or kumari kandam civilization. The words Sangam, Kumari, Kanda are all sanskrit words. The Kumari kandam is 100% fake story.
